Beginning in August of 2008, Guadalupe Partners directs and maintains Guadalupe House, a home for single mothers.
The mothers’ experiences in Detroit have shown the Guadalupe Partners the tremendous burdens confronting single mothers in a culture that is, largely, fatherless. The Partners have found mothers living with several children in single rooms; they have found mothers who are treated as pleasure stops for uncommitted men; they have found mothers struggling to maintain even the basics of child care—diapers, groceries, infant formula–while dealing with the humiliations of a finicky social welfare system.
The purpose of Guadalupe House will be, firstly, to bring mothers and their children out of an often hostile urban environment. The house is located in a friendly, family neighborhood in a semi-rural neighborhood. Secondly, the house will allow mothers to more easily assist each other, since they will be living in a single home in a cooperative environment. Finally, Guadalupe House will also benefit the mothers’ children, bringing good personal influences into their lives and giving them better educational opportunities.
