At American Family Planning yesterday we kept a vigil for one. The only other woman with an abortion appointment had listened to Sandy, had looked over our material, had sat in the car a long time debating, and had finally left. There remained, then, only an Indian couple who had pulled into the parking lot in a car bearing a license plate which read Happy4. They made it clear that they had no intention of becoming five–because, they quickly explained to us, the child the mother carried was a girl. I talked to the couple, then Alicia talked to them. They knew what they were doing, knew they were killing, but could not be shaken out of their senseless position. After the abortionist arrived, the woman came out again. She needed more cash. She ran over to the liquor store, followed by Alicia and Sandy. The woman could not operate the ATM, until the kindly liquor store owner came over to help her and even offered to call the police if she was being harassed. I later considered how very odd it was that the husband sent the woman out to get the cash while he remained inside the waiting room of the abortuary.
When the abortionist arrived I told him why his only customer wanted an abortion. Would he kill a girl just because she was a girl? He said nothing, while his wife displayed her middle finger.
Looking at the morning from a different perspective, however, the abortionist’s business that day was cut by 50%. His business is down to minimum staffing, and I am sure the day of its closing draws nearer.
