April 10, 2010

We visited a new mother on Saturday.  She is not one whom we had met at the abortuary, but was referred to us by another mom., Rita, who met this woman near her children’s school.  She stands on the corner there and sells snacks to the kids when they come out of school–things that she makes in her own kitchen, like fruit cups and homemade chips.  Her husband was recently deported, and this income is what she now lives on.    When we visited, she showed us into a very orderly house.  The three children were polite, each walking up to shake our hands.  The mother showed us her kitchen, opening the refrigerator and pantry doors to display the little that she had.  I asked her to make a grocery list, but at first she wouldn’t do it.  Just whatever you want to bring me, she said.  Finally, though, we coaxed a list of about ten basic items, which we brought back to her later in the morning.

We met a heating and cooling guy at Ana and Carmelo’s who gave us a quote for a new furnace and duct work.  I later called a friend to get his opinion on the quote–and he told me he just happened to have a fairly new furnace in storage!

More and more moms are coming to La Rosita to pick up diapers.  We need donations–especially size 5.
