August 30, 2009

Arriving at the abortuary at 7:50, we quickly spotted the car parked in the alley behind the Dearborn Grill, the neighboring business.  I stayed at the front of the mill in order to meet the few women who had parked in the lot while Alicia went into the alley to talk to the couple parked there.  The women who had parked in thelot passed into the building rather quickly.  I did have a brief conversation with a woman who insisted that God would forgive her; meanwhile, she was adamant that she was going to kill this child and if she ever got pregnant again she would kill that one too and the one after that. All of which she related while aiming a canister of pepper spray at me.

Kristine then arrived and I asked her to join Alicia, still back in the alley.  I could see the tail end of the car from where I stood.  Every once in a while the back-up lights would illuminate, as though the driver was intending to move away.  But he never did.  In fact, the car remained parked there almost an hour.  Alicia later told me that during that time she was clinging to the door to prevent the driver from moving.  Finally, Alicia and Kristine walked away from the car, which remained parked inthe alley.  They told me that the driver, the boyfriend, had asked to speak alone with the girl, Sahara.  Soon after that, the car pulled into the Dearborn grill parking lot.  From there the conversation continued.  This time, Alicia asked the boyfriend to allow her to speak alone with Sahara.  He left the car, leaving the car door open, while Alicia crouched next to the passenger side door and spoke with Sahara.  Then the abortionist pulls in behind American family Planning.  The abortionists’s wife gets out of the car and charges across the Dearborn Grill parking lot in order to rescue one of their few clients for the day.  Alicia jumps up, runs around to the driver’s side of the car, gets in, and locks all the doors.  The abortionists’s wife raps onthe window and gestures for Sahara to get out.  The boyfriend stands there and watches.  Mrs. Abortionist finally leaves and ALicia continues the conversation in an enclosed car–where she learns that it is not her mother’s wrath that Sahara fears, as she had earlier told Krisitne and Alica, but that of her boyfriend.  And sure enough, soon he starts to become agitated; after Alicia gets out of the car, he pulls around into the abortuary parking lot and soon is directing Sahara into the abortion mill, his hand in the small of her back.  At that point, though, they were an hour and fifteen minutes late for the appointment.  Furthermore, I know the abortionist gets mad at any clients who talk to us.  I expected, then, to see them come out very soon–which they did.  Probably, then, they left just because their appointment was rejected; although a woman inside of the abortuary, who also came out a few minutes later, said that Sahara had indeed “changed her mind. ”

Later that day it was a long drive out to Pontiac in order to leave a full newborn package–crib, carseat, diapers, onesies, wipes, etc.– to a mother there.  On the way we received a phone call from a woman who had received our envelope over at Summit abortuary.  She had left and wanted to set up a meeting with us.  That was the work of our Patrick, who for several weeks has been working as the only Guadalupe Partner at Summit.  He will be meeting with her this week.

Thank you all for your prayers.
