A young man and his girlfriend yesterdaywhizzed into the abortion mill parking lot, quickly exited the van and made straight for the door. As I walked beside him he laughed at the envelope I was holding towards him. He wanted to know if the envelope contained “big game money” or something like that. I told him it held life, the biggest money of all. When he came back out 45 minutes later, again moving quickly from door to van, his attitude was again flippant. He blamed everything on the Michigan economy. I told him we would help him, that even at that moment my van was packed with diapers, groceries and clothes. He said he wouldn’t take handouts–though I am sure if I had handed him an envelope and told him, “yes, you’ve won the big game money,” he would have taken it gladly. People are willing to play games, but they are not willing to love. “Love can’t buy groceries,” he said. Yes it can, I told him. Only love will power the sacrifice it takes to get through the rough times. One of the Partners who is usually very quiet, kind of to my surprise, began to scold him in rather forceful terms. I moved away as two other women on the sidewalk came over to call him to terms.
