It was a weekend of contrasts. On Friday I lowered into the ground a casket containing the bodies of seven aborted children. On Saturday, after another rough vigil at the abortuary, I attended the baptism of Eduardo Ramirez, one of the children rescued from the abortion mill. At the baptism we met a wonderful priest who suggested that Guadalupe Partners make formal, announced visits every month to his church. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet struggling mothers before they end up at the abortion mill; on the other hand, I am afraid we would be overwhelmed.
We had a meeting last week with a couple who is willing to inexpensively rent to us a home in Ypsilanti. Many families from Christ the King live in the neighborhood. Mothers brought out of Detroit, then, would be placed within an immediate community of encouragement and aid. The house is big enough to support at least two mothers–perhaps three depending on how many children each mother has. We have two mothers already who are willing to come. And this morning, Alicia received a phone call from one of our mothers, five months pregnant, who was hit in the face yesterday by her boyfriend. She asked us to come and take her away. These are heartbreaking situations. There is an immediate, obvious need–yet we have these suburban notions about propriety….
There was a rescue last week at the abortuary–a young, African-American woman. So far the baby is safe, but the mother is very immature and weak. Constant prayer is required.
